Storage Creation/ Creation Stored...

This is an art piece that I am doing just for self. I call it SentiMental.
SentiMental is a photographic art project about Home. I will take photos around my home for 30 days of items that I think are precious and have sentimental value to me. After being on a leave of absence from the MFA program and spending time back home in Missouri for a year I notice that my mom keeps everything! She tries to hold on to memories for herself through these objects and hopes that in the future a family member will care enough to value those objects like she once did in the past. Its funny how an object can transport you back in time, to a memory, good or bad. What is the fascination with time travel? Why do we possess these material items and call them “heirlooms”? I hope to find the answers to these questions, but mostly understand the relationship between spectators and time.

This is what I saw when I first woke up this morning. Actually, my family brought it to my attention after I was running around taking care of house chores and preparing my daughter off to school. I was moving so fast with blinders on that I did not stop to acknowledge the beautiful sunlight flood the kitchen and dining area. I quickly realized how we take things for granted, things like sunlight. As I stood there for a few seconds, I notice in the background where two balloons from my daughters’ birthday party, triggering memories of her having a good time with her friends. I also remember the stress, time, and money that went into preparing her birthday party.
Shortly after taking the picture, I put my blinders back on and continued with the morning…
