I read an article by author and scholar bell hooks, which said that art, can serve as “a balm to a depressed and wounded spirit.” Meaning, art has healing power for those who do not have a voice or cannot express themselves freely. This article inspired me to produce visual art that would hopefully inspire other African American women to create artwork and address issues that are important to them deliberately shedding light on the myriad of issues that African American women deal with daily.
